Another successfull UKTram seminar was held on 8 September 2009. The guest speaker was: John Bengough who is the Head of Domestic Policy Rail Standards & Safety with the Department of Transport.
The briefing addressed:
- Rail Vehicle Accessibility Regulations came into force at end of 1998
- 5,600 rail vehicles built to RVAR 98 already in service (This includes: 54% of modern trams; by their nature many other light rail vehicles are accessible (e.g. older DLR and Manchester Trams).
- New fleets due soon: Victoria Line, Manchester Tram, Edinburgh Tram, Blackpool, etc).
- Many older rail vehicles have been refurbished to RVAR 98 standards (e.g. Sheffield Supertram, older DLR fleet).
Next steps are outlined as: Targeted Compliance assessments on pre-RVAR fleets with set out levels of accessibility expected by 2020. The full transcript is available for viewing and download at the Members area.
